Businesses are producing less waste and recycling more. The amount of waste produced by the sites we regulate has been reduced by more than 18 per cent since 2005, whilst the amount of waste recovered and reused as increased by more than 40% since 2000.
However, there is more that we can do. Each year the UK generates approximately 290 million tonnes of waste, which causes environmental damage and costs businesses and consumers money.
Managing waste efficiently doesn't need to involve expensive new equipment - it's often about changes in behaviour and using existing equipment more efficiently. We are committed to improving waste management through our regulatory work. We’re helping companies to turn waste into valuable materials including compost, plastics and biodiesel.

Our waste
We aim to produce as little waste from our offices as possible. Where we do produce it, we want to make sure we send as little as possible to landfill. Since 2005/06 we have reduced the amount of waste we send to landfill each year by 158,000 kilograms – a 77 per cent reduction. That’s the equivalent of around 125 small cars.
