Managing water resources in England and Wales

Find out how we are balancing the amount of water available for people, the economy and the environment.

Water is a precious resource. Parts of England have less water available per person than some parts of the Mediterranean.

We are working to ensure that water companies, farmers and industry do not take too much water from the environment.

This work will ensure sustainable water levels in rivers, lakes and marshes, improving wildlife habitats and protecting endangered species. It will also ensure that water is available to supply our growing population and economy.

As a result of work already done to improve river habitats, our rivers are the healthiest they have been for over 20 years. Otters, salmon and other wildlife are returning to many rivers for the first time since the industrial revolution.

However, there is more that we can do to protect the environment, prepare for the impacts of climate change and meet new, ambitious standards set by Europe.
