The Northumbria River Basin District (RBD) covers an area of 9,000 square kilometres and stretches from south of Middlesborough to Berwick-upon-Tweed in the far north of England.
It has a range of land use including:
- bustling urban areas such as Newcastle and Gateshead
- busy industrial areas such as Teeside
- rolling farmland and the moorland of Northumberland National Park and the North Pennines.
